swimming with lizards and crabs...

Oh, I mean salamanders and crawdads!  That's what we did on Saturday in this crazy hot heat wave we are having.  We wanted to swim outside, and we have no access to any outside pools so that means we have to go find a cold river to jump in!  So, we drove up the Molalla river until we found a good spot that we could get to.  We had to pass up some really neat looking swimming holes because it was too much of a climb down to get to there.  The kids had a blast!  And, I think it really did the job...it was nice to get in and cool off, and we didn't warm up right away afterward because it was a pretty cold swim.  We even had to turn the heater on for the kids sitting in the back.  It was funny to think it was still 80 something on the late drive home but we had the heater on!  I was even chilly on the ride home, it really did take a while to warm up.

Then while we were down there we spotted some fun creatures in the water.  When Aric first saw the salamander he asked me if it was a toy.  I didn't realize what he was talking about, and was quite confused why he was asking me about a toy because we didn't have any toys with us.  But, then I finally spotted the red "lizard" (that's what they called it at first).  They all wanted to pick it up, but we said to just let it go back into the water and it did.  Then at the bottom of the river where we were swimming Daddy spotted a crawdad.  He caught it so the kids could get a closer look.  They thought it was a crab at first, and I thought April would never get back in the river because she was screaming when she saw it.  We had to explain that it was more scared of them and it wouldn't come up to them or pinch them.  My kids have done a lot of swimming in rivers and lakes this summer so they are getting more used to the idea of swimming with fish and creatures in the water.  It has been a fun adventure this summer.

It was fun to sit in the current in the shallower areas.
Daddy was sitting out with baby at this time so he took a picture of all of us.  Alexander did enjoy splashing a little with his feet and hands, but it was too cold for him.

Aaron didn't want to get out when it was time to go.  This was a spot we made our way to that was a little deeper.
It was a lovely place, and a lovely swim!
